Merrimack, NH considering starting its' own broadband utility

Merrimack, NH considering starting its' own broadband utility

"Everyone got one, but not everyone knows why. A survey was sent out to postal customers in town earlier this month as part of a study to see if it is feasible for the town to start its own broadband network. The study was encouraged by the Cable TV Advisory Committee to create alternatives to Adelphia, the town’s current cable and Internet provider."

The article goes on to say that the system would be based on FTTH (fiber to the home) technology. The cost of $3,000 per home seems a little high, but then Merrimack is not already in the power business, so their start up costs would be higher than those for cities with municipal power utilities.
