"Palo Alto considers expanding fiber-optic cable, Internet service"

"Money, more than technology, is the crucial issue as Palo Alto decides whether to push forward with an ambitious plan to wire the town's homes and businesses with ultra-zippy fiber-optic cable for Internet, television, movies and phone service. The municipal system, expanded from a 2-year-old pilot program, is projected to cost $35 million to $50 million, funded with a bond issue that would probably require voter approval. To break even, city officials say, 10,000 homes -- roughly 40 percent of the city -- must sign up for at least one of the services."
