County fights loss of fiber optics jobs by appealing to Oprah for help

County fights loss of fiber optics jobs by appealing to Oprah for help

I am not making this up:

"Can a trio of business barons help several thousand unemployed Pillowtex Corp. workers and others in Cabarrus County land jobs?"

"The Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce is willing to pay $55,000 to find out. The money covers a half-page, one-time ad in USA Today for an open letter to Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Oprah Winfrey, chamber Chief Executive Officer John Cox said Tuesday."

"Last month's collapse of Kannapolis-based textile giant Pillowtex, and the mothballing of the Corning Inc. optical fiber plant in Midland over the past year, caused more than 6,000 local jobs to disappear, Cox said."

Actually, Cabarrus County has a lot going for it. We've done a lot of work in Concord helping the city's electric utility build an extensive municipal fiber network -- Oprah, Warren and Bill, if you're reading this, give these guys a call.
