Indiana: Fort Wayne building combination public/private broadband system

Indiana: Fort Wayne building combination public/private wireless broadband system

The article describes a series of very tall towers the city is building with wireless developer Indiana Data Center (IDC). These will link fire stations and offer wireless access to police cars that drive to within 300 to 400 yards of a tower. Meanwhile, IDC will offer wireless broadband from these towers at a "reduced rate" to private citizens.

The writer expresses concern about how high these towers are; too bad they couldn't use an existing fiber network like Oakland County, Michigan (see the post on their system from earlier today). By eliminating the need to put microwave backhaul gear on the towers, Oakland County was able to use shorter, lighter, cheaper towers.
