"We get by with a little help from our friends ..."

This blog's been off the air for a week as we tackled a very challenging design for ADSS fiber cable on a high voltage (115 kV) transmission line with 1400' spans. Even full-time, experienced utility fiber system designers need help from time. I want to thank some of the folks that have helped us get through this crunch:

Dr. Cristian Militaru at AFL Telecommunications — one of the most knowledgeable people in the world when it comes to ADSS fiber optic cable design.

The folks at Powerline Systems, designers of PLS-CADD, a powerful tool for rapidly designing fiber cable systems on high voltage transmission lines then thoroughly assessing their performance in all kinds of weather conditions. (See the Fiber Planners web page on transmission line fiber design for links to some of the analyses we do with PLS-CADD.)

And of course, my colleague, Denise Frey at Fiber Planners, who's designed more ADSS fiber cable systems for more utilities than any other designer in the U.S. (or maybe even the world ...)
