Australian regulators evaluating powerline broadband

Two recent articles report on the Australian Communications Authority's (ACA) recently released background briefing paper on powerline broadband technology:

"More PLC Worries: Australia doubts technology's practicality"

"Powerline gets mixed reaction at ACA"

The ACA has a general web page on powerline broadband. The 23 page brief can also be downloaded and is worth reading for its' general view of powerline broadband regulation around the world. This includes annexes detailing regulatory limits on radio frequency emission limits in different countries.

I did not think the paper was as decisively negative as the two article above make it out to be, but clearly the ACA is concerned because of the heavy use made of high frequency radio to tie remote rural areas into the rest of the nation.

The ACA has made no rulings on powerline broadband yet; the briefing paper notes that it "has been prepared to assist with further deliberation on these systems."
