California: City of Moreno Valley deploys free-space-optics

"Systems integrator LightRiver Technologies and free-space optics supplier fSONA Communications announced that the City of Moreno Valley, CA has completed the deployment of the fSONA SONAbeam 155-S free-space optics (FSO) system to connect remote offices to the city's communications infrastructure."

FSO is a good niche product for cities and other users that don't own their own rights of way. Think of it as fiber optics without the cable -- lasers paired with receivers in two different buildings establish a data link directly through the air. Direct line of sight is needed between locations. Reports vary as to how susceptible different vendors' systems might be to problems with fog or rain.
