Pennsylvania: State senator proposes $50 million to accelerate broadband deployment

"The state senator ... will propose "significant" legislation today to accelerate access to broadband Internet and other new technology, stimulate economic development, and improve telephone competition in Pennsylvania. The proposals by Sen. Jake Corman, R-Bellefonte, would:"
  • "create a $50 million fund to help finance the installation of wireless and other broadband access technology in rural and underserved areas;"
  • "give telecommunications companies incentive to complete installation of broadband Internet access service at a speed of at least 1.5 megabits per second before 2008, seven years ahead of a deadline set by a 1993 law due to expire."

"'The main issue is deployment,' Corman said last week. 'Obviously, technology is more and more important every year, with every day that goes by, and to wait until 2015 to get this deployment to the areas ... is too long to wait.'"
