Australia: $40m fibre-optic bid by IT consortium for State of Tasmania's system

"A Tasmanian-led consortium wants to invest more than $40 million to commercialise the State Government-owned fibre-optic cable and provide an alternative to Telstra ... The State Government paid $23.1 million to Downer EDI earlier this year for the fibre-optic cable, which was laid alongside Duke Energy's gas pipeline."

"The State Government has examined the possibility of linking with a fibre-optic cable in the Basslink project, which will arrive in 2005. It is also considering whether to roll out fibre-optic cable with the Powerco gas pipeline to 38,500 Tasmanian homes by 2007, or to install a conduit for later use."
