Incumbent telco trying to spoil Scottish BPL roll-out?

The Financial Times reports:
"BT Group's decision to introduce broadband services in a small Scottish town, where Scottish & Southern is already trialling plans to connect householders to the internet through electricity plugs, is to be raised with Ofcom, the industry regulator. BT has been criticised for slow progress in introducing broadband services, particularly in rural areas.

"Ian Marchant, Scottish & Southern's chief executive, said he was not accusing BT of dirty tricks by targeting Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire but he would raise the issue when he met Ofcom next week. Mr Marchant said the aim was not to compete with BT in big urban areas but to bring broadband to more isolated areas deemed uneconomic to serve."

In a follow-up on this story, The Register reports that BT is "bemused" by Scottish & Southern's concerns.

Scottish & Southern is also deploying BPL (broadband over power line) in Winchester, England.
