PON gear sales rise while overall optical networking gear sales drop

Infonetics Research reports sales of PON (passive optical network) gear -- used primarily in FTTP (fiber to the premises) applications -- rose 20% this quarter over last quarter. Overall 2003 PON sales should be $102 million, up 91% from 2002. Almost 60% of these sales were in North America. The report goes on to forecast rapidly rising PON sales for the next several years.

This boom in PON equipment sales comes as Infonetics reports overall optical networking hardware sales were down 3%; over half of total overall equipment sales consisting of traditional SONET and SDH equipment. Infonetics projects overall optical networking hardware gear sales should finally begin recovering in 2004.
