European Union sponsors 20 million euro BPL (broadband over power line) project

The European Union is providing 9 million euros to help fund the first phase of its 'OPERA' (Open PLC European Research Alliance) broadband over power line initiative; others are investing another 11 million euros.
"An international consortium of utilities, technology companies, research institutions and consultants will develop a uniform European Powerline standard. The European Commission's long-term goal is to further develop the broadband market in Europe and to establish Powerline as an additional pillar beside DSL and cable access."

OPERA members include:
  • Advanced Digital Design S. A., Spain
  • Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki, Greece
  • Ascom Systec AG, Switzerland
  • Auna Telecommunicaiones S.A., Spain
  • Dieseno de Sistemas en Silicios S. A. (DS2), Spain
  • Dimat S. A., Spain
  • Eichhoff GmbH, Germany

It's interesting that U.S. BPL companies (or even their European affiliates) are conspicuously absent, while several non-EU companies from Japan and Israel are included.
