Japanese FTTH subscribers nearing 1 million

Based on government statistics for November 2003, Japan should have about 1 million FTTH (fiber to the home) subscribers by the end of this month and close to 2 million by the end of 2004 based on current deployment rates.

At the end of November, Japan had 815,000 FTTH subscribers (6% of Japan's 13.2 million broadband subscribers). DSL has 75% of the broadband market while cable TV has 18%.

FTTH subscriber acquisitions exceeded cable modem subscriber acquisitions by 67% in the last 3 months; if growth in cable modem users continues slowing FTTH subscribers will exceed cable modem users by sometime in 2005.
