Louisiana: St. Landry Parish School Board picks BellSouth for broadband

"The St. Landry Parish School Board voted Thursday to go with BellSouth Inc. for its new broadband communications network."

Much of the monthly cost of $52,000 will be subsidized by the federal government. The article gives a good account of the practical benefits of linking schools with broadband and sharing resources across the district.

Too bad they didn't think of partnering with their local power utility building their own fiber network. A power utility could buy and install close to 100 miles of dedicated fiber cable with almost unlimited bandwidth and upgrade potential for what the Board will pay BellSouth for just one year's service.
