Vietnamese power utility undertakes major telecom role

"The Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) announces as from May 2004, the company will launch system of Internet for customers to strive for receiving 100,000 Internet subscribers in the first stage and then the number will be raised to 1.5 million subscribers."

"This year EVN will launch service of Internet telephone; optical fiber cable television in combination of data transmission of electricity sector in some cities and provinces; deploying international telecom services under facilities of satellite and optical fiber cable; establishing three centers for international telecom in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. In 2003, the electricity sector has launched system of optical fiber cable in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City and has plan to launch it in other 25 provinces, upgrading telecom line over the north-south electricity 500 kV line.
