Oregon: "Airports, coffee shops and McDonald's were just the start. Now even toxic-waste dumps offer Wi-Fi access"

The Seattle Times reports
"Last week a huge Wi-Fi hotspot was created in a swath of Eastern Oregon known previously for its watermelons and toxic-weapons stockpile. U.S. Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., was to cut ceremonial wires in Boardman and Hermiston and launch what was described as the largest regional wireless broadband digital communications system in the U.S. When it's done the hotspot will be more than 600 square miles, more than four times the area of Portland. It's being developed by a partnership of EZ Wireless and the Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program administered by the Morrow County Office of Emergency Management."

(Article is at the end of Technology news summary)

DailyWireless has a detailed description of the project. Wi-Fi Networking News and the December 29 page for this weblog also have brief notes describing the network.
